The Rensselaer Polytechnic Engineers will start their season this Saturday against Saint Mary's University of Nova Scotia, Canada.

The Engineers are starting fresh with a new coach in Mike Smith, who replaces Seth Appert. Smith spent 12 seasons at Canisius College and compiled a 169-221-59 record. In 2012-13, Smith led the Golden Griffins to an Atlantic Hockey championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament. Last year Canisius finished with a 19-10-7 record and an Atlantic Hockey regular season championship.

Freshman Jaren Burke should make an immediate impact for the Engineers. Last season, Burke scored 29 goals and dished out 24 assists for the Ottawa Jr. Senators of the Central Canada Hockey League.

Freshmen Troy York and Gavin Payne should also make significant contributions to Engineers this season.

RPI returns two of their three top points leaders from last year in Evan Tironese (7 goals, 21 assists) and Jacob Hayhurst (7 goals, 13 assists). Also returning is defenseman Jared Wilson who was second on the team with 11 goals last season.

Chase Perry returns in net for the Engineers. Perry was under constant pressure a season ago facing 939 shots over the course of the season or about 33.5 shots per game.  This was evident in in his 6-20 record with a 3.35 GAA and .906 save percentage. Perry is a solid goaltender but the Engineers need to play better defense in front of their junior netminder if they expect to win in the ECAC.
