UALBANY Football Week 2 Preview: UAlbany @ Rhode Island

The UAlbany Great Danes travel to Kingston, RI to take on Rhode Island in their first conference of the young season on Saturday afternoon. The Rams upset previously ranked Delaware in week one, 21-19, for their first win against a ranked opponent since 2011.

This week will be a match-up of two teams who rely on their defenses, but the game might come down to who will be able to make plays on offense.

UAlbany Offense vs. Rhode Island Defense: The Great Danes offense could move the ball against an experienced Pitt defense last week, but were unable to turn their drives into points. QB Vincent Testaverde threw for 263 yards and a touchdown, but also threw an interception and was sacked four times. He will lean on a running game that features RBs Elijah Ibitokun-Hanks and Karl Mofor. The run game could make room for some big plays from WR Dev Holmes, who captured CAA Rookie of the Week honors after a breakout performance against Pitt. They'll need that kind of performance against a Rams defense that forced two turnovers against the Fighting Blue Hens last week, one of those turnovers leading to points on offense. Keep an eye on LBs Branyan Javier-Castillo and Justin Hogan; Javier-Castillo lead the Rams with 11 total tackles against Delaware and Hogan’s forced fumble in the third quarter was a key turning point that earned him CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. DL Brian Ginnetti is another Ram keep an eye on; he had six total tackles against Delaware, which included a credited tackle for a loss.

Rhode Island Offense vs. UAlbany Defense: The Rams’ offense depends on the dual-threat QB JaJuan Lawson, who passed for 170 yards and ran for 46 yards against Delaware. His primary target is WR Aaron Parker, who lead the Rams in receiving yards last season. He’ll be depended on by the Rams to add versatility to their offense. RB Zoe Bryant, Jr. will also be there to take the load off of Lawson’s shoulders; last week, he led the team with 81 rushing yards. They will face a Great Dane defense that allowed 26 first half points to Pitt, but adjusted in the second half to shutout the Panthers. The Great Danes have one of the more experienced defenses in CAA and while the defensive line didn’t have any sacks last week, they will have their chances against Rhode Island. The Rams’ offensive line that surrendered two sacks and four tackles for a loss against Delaware. Look LB Eli Mencer and DEs Nick Griffin and Brian Dolce to have solid games this week.

If the Great Danes learn their lessons from last week and can continue to be effective both sides of the ball, their chances of winning look very good.
