30 Second College Hockey Preview: UMASS and RPI, 10/12/18 - 10/13/18

UMass and RPI will play a home-and-away series this weekend starting in Amherst, MA on Friday and then heading to Troy, NY on Saturday.

UMass (a member of the Hockey East) is coming off an impressive 6-1 exhibition win over the Royal Military College. UMass had 10 players record at least 1 point the game with John Leonard leading the way with four points (2 goals, 2 assists).

A late goal by Meirs Moore helped RPI narrowly escape with a 3-2 win over the University of Prince Edward on Sunday. The Engineers jumped out to 2-0 lead but allowed UPEI to get back in the game.

This weekend RPI is going to need solid goaltending and defense if they hope to escape with win(s). In their exhibition against Royal Military College, UMass had 50 shots on net. This is something RPI struggled with last season - it put their goalies in a tough situation to make a ton of saves.

Last week the Engineers struggled clearing the defensive zone, which allowed UPEI to set up in the offensive zone and produce shots on net.

It will be interesting to see the development of this young RPI team as the face a more experienced Hockey East team. They'll need to stay disciplined against a physical team and stay out of the penalty box. Out of UMass's 50 shots against RMC, 21 of them were on the power play with two resulting in goals.

Offensively RPI will need to find its identity. With so many new players on their roster, it will be interesting to see who steps up.
